Short-haul, coastal container ships
Our "Quattro" (4th millennium of sail) technology also powers the creation of a new category of short-haul, coastal container ships.
Problem:
Large ocean-going container ships deliver containers to major ports around the world, where the containers are moved on trucks and railways.
Our patented technology powers the creation of a new category of small, efficient roll-on, roll-off container ships that deliver containers on truck beds along coastal routes and to local ports without the need for new infrastructure (such as unloading cranes or deep water channels or harbors) at the local ports.
Many nations have communities that are best reached via their extensive coastal regions, small ports and harbors. In many of these instances road and rail transport is insufficient or over-crowded or both. In contrast, there is significant under-utilization of coastal transport to deliver products via containers off-loaded from ocean-transit container shipping.
Examples include Pacific Island nations, the States of Maine and Alaska, the Scandinavian countries, the UK, EU countries with long coastlines, Mediterranean countries, Japan, etc.
Solution: Our patented technology powers the design of fleets of decarbonized, efficient, short-haul, coastal container ships, that require minimal use of combustion engines and propellers and minimal new port facilities, while also creating new jobs for local ship-building and cargo handling and small-port employment.
The mast/sail system allows for multiple sail configurations because no one sail configuration will be right for all routes. For instance, prevailing wind directions and likelihood of heavy weather will impact choice of optimal sails and sail configurations for any specific ship, and also throughout a voyage.
Clipper ship style mast/sails provide the most in-transit configuration capabilities, much like the fastest clipper ships of the 1800s, to handle changing wind and weather conditions, and optimize speed and stability.
